The brown striped fern grows on shady walls and rocks, like here on the wall of the former railway viaduct between Leiwen and Trittenheim. The willows on the riverbank provide shade on the wall that rises behind the little road on the bank of the Moselle.
The brown striped fern is found in warm to cool Europe, North America, South Africa, the Himalayas …. Already in the 1st century Dioscorides and Pliny the Elder wrote about various healing effects of this fern. The botanist, doctor and Lutheran preacher Hieronimus Bock devoted himself to the plant in his herbal book in 1539, writing about “old women”, “vil fantaſei” and “nacket Jungfraw” … (Source: Wikipedia)
