In 1764, King Louis XV of France granted Prince Bishop Cardinal Louis-Joseph de Laval-Montmorency (1710-1802) permission to found a glassworks in the town of Baccarat. Window panes, mirrors and stemware were produced until the first crystal furnace went into operation in 1816. At that time, over 3000 workers were already employed at the site.

In 1823, Baccarat received its first royal commission, which was followed by many orders for kings and heads of state all over the world. In 1855, Baccarat won its first gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. Today, the listed company Baccarat S.A. continues to produce crystal glass and is based in Nancy and Paris.
