St-Quentin, Scy-Chazelles
Moselle, river kilometre 302

The church of St-Quentin in Scy-Chazelles was built around 1120; close to Metz.

Jean-Baptiste Nicolas Robert Schuman (1886 – 1963) later lived in the village. He was born a German in Clausen/Luxembourg, later became Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of France, and is considered one of the “Fathers of Europe”.

On 9 May 1950, the then Foreign Minister presented the Schuman Plan (Schuman Declaration) in a government declaration – for a new construction of Europe.

The Treaties of Rome of 1957 followed his proposals from 1950. In 1958 he was elected the first President of the newly founded European Parliament.

His home can be visited today. You stand in front of the table where he wrote his speeches, see the books he read, wander through the garden he seemed to love.

Robert Schuman died in Scy-Chazelles near Metz on 4 September 1963. He is buried here in the church of St. Quentin next to his home.
