Mirabelles. Mirabelles also blossom in April in the headwaters of the Yorne. In Lorraine, more than 70% of the world’s production grows on over 250,000 mirabelle plum trees (www.tourismus-lothringen.de). The yellow fruits are native to Asia Minor and northern Persia, originated from a cross between the plum and the cherry plum, or from the plum and the blackthorn. In 1803 they were first described by Moritz Balthasar Borkhausen as Prunus syriaca.
In 1959, Erwin Janchen referred to them as Prunus domestica subsp. Syriaca, as a subspecies of plum (Prunus domestica) (Wikipedia).
They are enjoyed fresh, on cakes and pies, in pastries, as brandy and liqueur, as jam … In August, the city of Metz celebrates a great festival in honor of the mirabelle.
